Day Trip: Colorado Springs to Royal Gorge

Arriving at COS? You can be rafting the Royal Gorge within 2 hours of landing. This is the ultimate single-day Colorado adventure — whitewater, ziplines, and canyon dining, all within 1 hour of Colorado Springs.

The drive: Colorado Springs → Cañon City via CO-115 South. Exactly 1 hour, 60 miles. Scenic high plains and canyon approach with Pikes Peak visible to your north.

Depart Colorado Springs

Leave from Colorado Springs (hotel, Airbnb, or COS airport rental). Head south on CO-115. The drive to Cañon City takes exactly 1 hour through open plains with Pikes Peak in your rearview. No traffic, no highway tolls.

Morning Rafting — Royal Gorge Rafting

Half-day whitewater rafting through the Royal Gorge. The Royal Gorge section is Class IV–V — 1,000-foot granite walls, churning rapids, expert licensed guides. Beginners: the Bighorn Sheep Canyon section is Class II–III, perfect for families. Book the 9 AM trip in advance — summer weekends fill fast.

Afternoon Ziplines — Royal Gorge Zipline Tours

Six ziplines up to 800 feet long, soaring above the same canyon you just rafted through. The canyon views from 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River are unlike anything else in Colorado. The Classic Course runs 2–2.5 hours. No experience needed — minimum 70 lbs, maximum 250 lbs.

Weekend: Colorado Springs + Royal Gorge Adventure

Arriving at COS on Friday afternoon? You can be checking into your Royal Gorge glamping accommodation before sunset. This weekend itinerary combines the best of Colorado Springs on Day 1 with a full Royal Gorge adventure day on Day 2 — and you're back to COS in time for a Sunday evening flight home.

Day 1 — Colorado Springs

Garden of the Gods

Start with Colorado's most iconic free attraction — towering red sandstone formations against a blue sky and Pikes Peak backdrop. Walk the 1.5-mile Main Loop Trail (paved, easy, wheelchair accessible). Arrive before 9 AM to beat crowds. Free admission, open daily.

Late Morning

Pikes Peak or Manitou Springs

Option A: Drive Pikes Peak Highway to the 14,115-foot summit — panoramic views of Colorado, Kansas, and New Mexico on clear days ($20/vehicle). Option B: Explore the charming mountain village of Manitou Springs — mineral springs, galleries, the Incline, and Cave of the Winds.

Hit the river first — rafting trips run in the morning before afternoon thunderstorms. Book the 9 AM half-day Royal Gorge section (Class IV–V) or the beginner-friendly Bighorn Sheep Canyon run (Class II–III). Expert guides, all equipment provided.

Optional: Royal Gorge Bridge & Park

The Royal Gorge Bridge (1,053 feet above the river) is worth a stop before heading back. Walk across the highest suspension bridge in the US, take the tram, or simply take in the canyon from the rim. Admission required.
